The Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan is committed to making its education accessible to families with as wide an income range as possible, and to doing so in a way that is respectful of those families whose circumstances prompt them to apply for tuition reduction. Tuition is set on a sliding scale based on parents’ demonstrated ability to afford its cost. The maximum tuition is the actual cost of education; the minimum tuition is a nominal sum.

To conduct our tuition assessment, Solomon Schechter contracts with an out-of-state financial aid consultant to perform objective assessments of parents’ ability to pay for their children’s education.

In the late fall, every enrolled family and every family that has submitted a complete application for admission automatically receives a package of tuition setting materials. Those families who anticipate that their means will allow them to pay the top tuition need not fill out the materials.

Families wishing to apply for a reduction in their tuition levels fill out the Parents’ Financial Statement, a form published by the School and Student Service for Financial Aid, an affiliate of the Educational Testing Service. This form asks for information on family income, assets, and expenses, and includes space for describing special circumstances. Parents are also asked to send a photocopy of the Parents’ Financial Statement, along with their past year’s and current year’s federal tax returns, directly to Solomon Schechter School’s financial aid consultant. The financial data families submit are held in confidence throughout the assessment process.

The family contribution to tuition that is determined in this way is sent to the family in their contract for enrollment, which returning families receive in the early spring and new families receive as part of their offer of admission. This process is identical for returning and for applicant families; the bases for the calculation are identical for all grade levels.

Families who are interested in applying for tuition assistance should have submitted their paperwork by January 3, 2007 for the 2007-2008 academic year. Late applicants should submit all necessary documentation and may be considered for sliding scale tuition later in the spring.

An appeal process is available to families in the relatively rare cases in which the family feels that the tuition amount that has been set is out of line with its true wherewithal, or in which the family’s circumstances have changed since the time of their initial filing.
